Prohibitions on the sale or consumption of alcohol

Alcohol laws in the United States are very strict, varying from state to state and sometimes even within a state. There is one rule for everyone: you can buy an alcoholic beverage in a store, mall, bar, or restaurant only if you are at least 21 years old. You will always be asked to provide proof of this fact, even if you are older. It is also generally forbidden to drink beer or other alcoholic beverages outdoors. If, for example, you are caught with a bottle of beer or simply drunk on a street, park, or public transportation in the capital, Washington, you will face a fine of up to 100 USD and up to 90 days in jail. An even stiffer fine could be imposed if you are caught serving an underage person an alcoholic beverage. Alcoholic beverages are generally sold only in stores licensed to sell liquor, after 11 p.m. sale of alcohol is prohibited.
